Witness in New Philadelphia Double Murder Case Appears in Court on Gun Charges

Sherwood waives gun charges to County court.

The key prosecution witness in the upcoming New Philadelphia double homicide trial appeared in District Court earlier this week on charges he’s facing in a separate case.

Jahlique Sherwood, 22, of Saint Clair, waived felony charges of receiving stolen property and possessing a gun without a license to Schuylkill County Court of Common Pleas at a preliminary hearing at District Court in Port Carbon on Tuesday.

Police in Saint Clair say they spotted Sherwood on the night of Dec. 19 getting out of a vehicle and walking into a convenience store. At that time, police say they knew there was an active warrant for Sherwood’s arrest for failing to appear in court on a different set of charges he’s facing.

Sherwood was taken into custody inside the convenience store. At the time of his arrest, police say he had a Springfield XD .45 ACP with a pink grip and weapon-mounted light concealed in his waistband.

The 13-round magazine contained 10 rounds of hollow-point bullets at the time of his arrest, police say.

Not only did Sherwood not have a license to carry that gun, police say, it was also reported stolen out of Bloomsburg.

Sherwood was wanted on a Schuylkill County bench warrant that night in Saint Clair for failing to appear in court for a conference on another set of charges he’s facing. He’s actually facing three sets of charges.

The warrant was related to a case in which he’s charged with misdemeanor simple assault and summary charges of harassment and disorderly conduct related to an alleged domestic violence incident in July in Minersville.

Sherwood is also facing DUI and other related charges over an alleged incident in Pottsville. A preliminary hearing in that case is scheduled for Feb. 9 before Magisterial District Judge James Reiley.

This past Tuesday, due to his involvement in the New Philadelphia murders case and the conflicts of interest that causes, the gun charges case is being prosecuted by the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office. Sherwood is being represented by Public Defender Jeffrey Markosky because the usual Public Defender in Port Carbon District Court, Ashley Sabol, is representing the accused double murderer, Lamour Branch, in the homicides case.

Sherwood remains locked up in Schuylkill County Prison.
