The developer on the former Miners Bank hotel project in downtown Pottsville says he expects to purchase the former Ramada hotel at the old Pomeroy’s department store and expand the project there.
Bill Metzinger, president of Metz Hospitality LLC, announced Thursday that he plans to purchase the 60-room Pottsville Hotel this Spring and connect that property with his ongoing project at the former Miners Bank building – previously known as The Rosalia – on the opposite side of the block via an elevated, enclosed bridge.
Together, it will create a 90-room hotel with multiple venue spaces, meeting rooms, a pair of commercial kitchens, sports bar and other bar spaces, and other amenities.
The $10 million project will now be known as The Miners 1928 Hotel.
Formerly known as Rosalia Hotel and its 30 guest rooms and venue spaces inside the historic Miners Bank building, the project upon expansion and completion will feature 90 hotel guest rooms, an expansive lobby, a sports bar, two more bar spaces, an in-vault tasting room, and two 5,000-square feet venue spaces.
Combined, the space will also feature six meeting rooms, two commercial kitchens, a continental breakfast area, a fitness center, a game room, and other guest features.
Inside the bank building, a custom bar in the lobby area will have repurposed teller stations and other marble elements original to the former Miners Bank.
Metzinger says plans are still in place to have the 30-room hotel at the former Miners Bank open by this Spring and completed expansion to the current Pottsville Hotel by January 2027.
Once acquisition of what historically has been known as the Pomeroy’s department store is complete, Metzinger says a complete renovation will get started on it. That includes fully modernized rooms and furnishings, redesigned halls, refreshed common areas, and updated meeting and event spaces.
The 3,000-square foot bar and restaurant area will have an entirely new concept, too, Metzinger says.
Future expansion of The Miners 1928 Hotel will include a full-service spa, salon, and nail services. Construction on that phase is expected to begin late next year or by early 2028 within the parking garage area at the former bank property.
With Thursday’s announcement, Metzinger also announced a leadership team on the project. Bill Kao, of the Lehigh Valley, will serve as General Manager and Lianne Russell, of Orwigsburg, assumes the role of Sales Director.
Reacting to Thursday’s announcement, State Sen. Dave Argall says, “With this new hotel complex, Bill and his team, along with Pottsville’s new leadership, are delivering a giant boost for Pottsville and our entire region.”
Pottsville Mayor Tom Smith adds, “The redevelopment of the former Ramada site strengthens our tax base, creates jobs, and continues the positive trajectory we’re building in Pottsville. Metz Properties has demonstrated a clear commitment to our city, and this investment reflects growing confidence in our direction and the opportunities that lie ahead.”
