An attempted homicide charge against a Mahanoy City man for his role in a Bloomsburg shooting earlier this month has been dropped.
Further, Samuel Evans, 19, was released from Columbia County Prison on Tuesday on $500,000 unsecured bail after waiving all other charges he’s facing to County court.
Court records show Evans waived his right to a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Russell Lawton earlier this week. Although the charge of attempted homicide was withdrawn in his case, Evans still faces felony charges of aggravated assault and carrying an unlicensed firearm.
He’s also looking at misdemeanor offenses for possession of a weapon and 11 counts of reckless endangerment.
The decision to reduce bail to $500,000 unsecured, which freed Evans from prison, was per an agreement between the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office and Evans’ attorney, William Whitenack Jr., of West Chester.
At around 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 1, police in Bloomsburg responded to a call of shots fired into a crowd of people near Chestnut Ave. and East St.
Soon after they arrived on the scene, police say they found a 16-year-old victim on E. 4th St. suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper hip area. He was taken to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, for treatment.
Evans is accused of firing several shots into a crowd of 10 people and allegedly hitting the victim once.
Police say they were able to piece together video surveillance and eyewitness accounts to point them toward Evans as their primary suspect.
