Orwigsburg to Purchase Second Speed Sign

Signs will bookend Market St. in the borough

Orwigsburg is planning to install a second speed notification sign on its main drag.

Earlier this week, Borough Council members voted unanimously to purchase a speed radar device for $4,145 from Stalker Radar, of Richardson, Texas.

The plan is to place the new sign on E. Market St. to bookend the current sign on W. Market St. Both will be seen as motorists enter the main residential and business areas of downtown Orwigsburg.

In addition to purchasing the new sign, the borough also plans to flip the existing sign on W. Market St. so it’s actually facing motorists as they enter that area. Currently, the sign is basically telling drivers how fast they’re leaving town, not driving into it.

Borough Manager Bill Reppy told council members this week that he’ll place the purchase order before the end of the week and it could arrive in about a month.

Orwigsburg Borough Notes

In other action and notes from the Wednesday, April 9 council meeting:

📝 The borough hired Brian Costenbender as a laborer per the terms of the Teamsters bargaining agreement.

📝 Council members OK’d DBR Industrial Services to paint interior piping at the Orwigsburg water plant at a cost of $9,850.

The company completed exterior painting of the water plant filters during the week of March 10.

📝 The borough’s Water/Sewer Committee has requested an estimate for installing a permanent generator that provides redundant backup power at Well #1 building. This cost is expected to range from $85,000-100,000.

The committee also requested an estimate to provide just the installation of a docking station with a manual transfer switch. The docking station, alone, would cost $29,494.

On Wednesday, council members approved getting three quotes for the purchase of materials and installation of an electrical docking station with a manual transfer switch at Well #1.

📝 Orwigsburg received $125,000 in grant funding to complete dredging and upgrades at Fishers Dam. The borough had requested $300,000. This grant required a 15% match from the borough, which equates to $18,750. Additional costs for engineering are required. Benesch Engineering will complete that part of the project.

📝 Benesch Engineering has also been retained to prepare an engineering work order for the 2025 Road Program using Liquid Fuels funds. This includes the company managing project design and bidding, construction administration, and PennDOT coordination of Liquid Fuels money.

The 2025 Road Program includes the paving of W. Church St., from Walborn Ave. to N. Liberty St. and adjacent to the intersection of Grove and N. Washington streets (Route 443).
