The state Dept. of Environmental Protection has granted a temporary extension of the operating permit for the Blythe Recycling and Demolition Site (BRADS) Landfill.
The operating permit which BRADS was working under expired on Jan. 20. Last January, BRADS applied for an renewal of its operating permit but DEP has yet to rule on that request. Since then, DEP has issued Technical Deficiency letters to BRADS ownership on July 3 and Nov. 13, 2024.
In a Jan. 17 letter to David Pannucci, regional engineer at BRADS Landfill, DEP Waste Management Program manager Roger Bellas indicates that the agency is still reviewing how the landfill on Burma Rd. is and will collect and control gas.
“In order to allow for sufficient time for the Department to evaluate BRADS renewal application, specifically the sections related to landfill gas collection and control, the Department is hereby granting an extension to the term of BRADS permit,” Bellas writes.
The extension on the current operating permit allows BRADS to operate as it has been until July 30.
Bellas indicates that BRADS may not implement any other operation or construction changes at the landfill until the permit renewal is approved.
Bellas also writes, “If the terms of the permit of the conditions of this extension are not complied with, it is not guaranteed that this permit term will be extended again. Therefore, if the conditions of this extension are not complied with to the satisfaction of the Department, BRADS may have to prepare to cease all operations at the site and commence closure activities.”
