One person is dead after being shot by police in Shenandoah overnight.
According to information released this morning by Pennsylvania State Police Troop L Major Case Team, this incident happened at 309 W. Coal St. in Shenandoah shortly after 12:30 a.m. Monday.
Police say at that time, officers from Shenandoah and Mahanoy City police departments were summoned to that address for a report of a burglary in progress.
When police arrived, the property owner was there to meet them. He told police that he’s got video surveillance inside that address because it’s vacant.
The property owner said video surveillance showed that a person was inside the building. That person was wearing a mask and carrying “a big knife,” police say.
Police entered the building and as they were attempting to clear it, they found the suspected burglar hiding under a bed upstairs.
State Police say as the responding officers were moving the bed, the person under it then lunged at an officer with that knife.
Police fired their service weapon, striking the individual under the bed. Officers attempted to provide first aid to the suspected burglar and called for EMS help.
A representative of the Schuylkill County Coroner’s office pronounced the suspected burglar dead.
The name of the person shot has not been released to the public, pending notification of their family.
State Police and the Schuylkill County District Attorney are actively investigating the incident.
This is a developing story. We’ll have more on this throughout the day.
UPDATE: Police have released the identity of the man shot by police this morning.
