Police have released the identity of the man shot by police during an alleged burglary Monday morning in Shenandoah.
According to new information from Pennsylvania State Police Troop L Major Case Team, police shot and killed 32-year-old Bryon David Scheuring, of Shenandoah, at a little past 12:30 a.m. Monday.
Police responded to a call from the owner of 309 W. Coal St., Shenandoah, at around that time saying there was a burglary in progress at that address. The owner of the property said it was vacant but video surveillance inside purportedly showed Scheuring inside.
Scheuring was wearing a mask and had a machete in his possession, according to the property owner who witnessed the surveillance footage.
The property owner called 9-1-1 to summon officers from Shenandoah and Mahanoy City to the scene.
State Police say the Shenandoah and Mahanoy City officers found Scheuring hiding under a bed in an upstairs bedroom at that W. Coal St. address.
Investigators say the responding officers “gave numerous verbal commands” to Scheuring in an attempt to get him to surrender. He reportedly did not obey those commands.
Police then attempted to move the bed to take Scheuring into custody. As they did this, Scheuring allegedly lunged at police with the machete.
A Shenandoah police officer fired a single round and hit Scheuring, State Police say.
Officers then rendered first aid to Scheuring but he did not survive the injuries suffered in the shooting. He was pronounced dead by the Schuylkill County Coroner’s office.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing, State Police say.

It is still unclear if it was a knife, a big knife or a machete. But at least it is clear that the burglar was hiding under the bed.
Please keep us posted about the development of the story, Canary.

The latest update from police is that the big knife was, indeed, a machete. It seems to be the “big knife” of choice in these parts.

I was recently watching the “Cops” series on Fox where police all over the country is masterfully resolving all the conflicts, mostly with the drug abusers. Upon arrival, policemen politely explain why they are there, if someone resists the arrest they simply use a taser and put haldcuffs on that evildoer. But, I guess, the reality is way too far from TV reality shows:-(
