Q&A with Lauren Roehl, owner of Sughr & Company / Sughr Cupcakes

Learn more about Sughr & Company …

What inspired you to start this business, and how did your personal journey lead you here?
“Sughr & Company originally started way back in 2005 when I made my first cupcake and took it into a few co-workers. I’ve always loved to dabble in baking. My passion for baking really grew throughout the years and really ramped up in 2019.

In September of 2018, our son was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect at our 22 week anatomy scan. in January of 2019, Hudson was born and fought so hard for 27 days before passing away. As a means to fundraiser for The Children’s Heart Foundation in memory of Hudson, Sughr officially got licensed as a home baker and hit the ground.

When the world all but shut down in 2020, I peddled cupcakes from my home kitchen and offered contactless porch pick up. A small group on Facebook grew and with each sale, I was baking more and more cupcakes.

One of the largest sales I had included over 40 flavors and almost 1700 cupcakes set up in front of BG’s grocery store a few doors down. We sold out in under 5 hours! Fast forward to the summer of 2021 and I ordered a food truck.

Almost an entire year later, she was ready to roll and I was licensed as a mobile bakery in the summer of 2022. We have attended so many community events and have made such wonderful connections pulling our unique pink trailer.

After taking a huge leap of faith, I decided to leave my job with the support of my husband (and my mom!) and THEN I found the amazing location we are currently occupying at King’s Village.

Most mornings I pinch myself just to make sure I’m not dreaming!”

What unique products or services do you offer that can’t be found elsewhere in our community?
“With having 15+ experienced bakers under one roof, we offer SO many options. In no specific order, and not all included!

Sughr Cupcakes offers gourmet cupcakes. Our menu has almost 250 flavors with a definite top 5 fan favorites: strawberry crunch, tandy cake, lemon blueberry, chocolate & peanut butter, triple chocolate. We attend events with our food truck and also take orders (single flavor, by the dozen). We offer 6 different flavors per week and change flavors weekly.

Kreative Kakes offers custom cakes in varying sizes and flavors. Kristina’s cakes are almost too beautiful to cut… but don’t worry, once you cut one and taste it, you won’t be sorry because her cakes really taste as incredible as they look!

Heavenly Macarons makes the most incredible macarons in Schuylkill Co. Marcie has an incredible selection of flavors and typically offers 6 different flavors per week.

Swickerdoodles Cake Pops make the most delicious cake pops ever! Jessica makes so many incredible shapes and tasty flavors. These also change weekly in the store! A personal favorite is her specialty ‘swickerdoodle’ flavor.

Sweet Barista offers delicious peanut rolls and ganache (lava) cakes. We always carry these in stock, so you’ll never run out!

Plain Jane Cheesecakes offers the best slices of heaven around, typically 2 flavors per week, with flavors changing weekly.

Missy’s Cookies & Amy Slovick provide our cookie selection! Between the two we have royal icing sugar cookies, classic chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal raisin cookies, cranberry delight cookies, and chocolate & peanut butter – we also have the BEST cream pie cookies (oatmeal, chocolate pb, and chocolate chip).

The Rustic Confectionery provides pies, apple dumplings, and the newest addition, sweet cinnamon rolls.

We also carry the following items: The Maid’s Quarters Bed & Breakfast – scones, Schach’s Sweets – freeze-dried candy, whoopie pies, Sweet G’s Pretzels, Creative Crispies, Country Pleasures Jams & Jellies, Sasha’s Canine Bakery.”

How does your business contribute to the local community or participate in community events?
“Sughr & Company is a part of Coal Region Causes, a Schuylkill County nonprofit organization focused on promoting positivity and giving back to the community. Before joining Coal Region Causes, Sughr & Company has participated in many raffles and donations within the community.”

Can you share an interesting fact or story about your business that most people may not know?
“SUGHR has a unique spelling for a very special reason. ‘HR’ is a beautiful nod to our late son, Hudson Roehl.”

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a small business, and how did you overcome it?
“Leaving a full-time job I was at for 15 years, remodeling a storefront and opening all within a month and a half has been the biggest challenge and it has truly only been up from there. I’m sure as any small business owner can attest, owning your own business means you’ve never worked harder in your life.”

What do you want customers to experience when they interact with your business?
“We really strive to make your experience a good one once you walk in our doors. We love to let you browse at your own pace or ask 5 questions in a row! Whatever your speed is, we are ready to match it. We have a ton of personal recommendations and love to hear your feedback!”

What are your future plans or dreams for your business? Are there any upcoming projects or expansions you’re excited about?
“We’ve recently started holding paint & sip classes. We would eventually love to rent out our space for ‘cupcake’ parties, small luncheons, etc.”

What advice would you give to someone wanting to start their own business in our community?
“Go for it! If you have the means and the support, there is no time like the present. Ask questions, ask for help. Don’t try to do everything alone. It’s truly life-changing and one of the most incredible experiences to be able to turn a dream into your reality.”

What does your business offer that would make a great gift for the holiday season?
“Our holiday pre-order is now available! Holiday Pre-orders are open until 12/18, but some items are limited in quantity!”
