Pottsville Area school board members voted 7-2 on Wednesday to select Sarah Yoder as its next Superintendent.
Yoder replaces Jeffrey Zwiebel and Acting Superintendent Jared Gerace in that position at the school. She is the former Superintendent at Saint Clair Area.
Board members approved an annual starting salary of $130,000 and a contract extending to June 30, 2024.
Directors Jerome Urban and Linda Wytovich voted against hiring Yoder.
As this brings to an end Gerace’s short term as Acting Superintendent, several members of the Pottsville Area school board thanked him for his time and for taking over at such a tumultuous time for the district.
“I want to sincerely thank Dr. Gerace (and all staff) for their work and diligence over the past year,” board president Bud Quandel said Wednesday. “We were able to navigate thru adverse conditions with a successful fiscal year. We stand on your shoulders.”
Quandel said the school hired a head hunter, or job recruitment specialist, to find candidates to fill the job of Superintendent. It’s also using the same agency to fill its still-open position of Business Manager that’s been vacant for nearly a year. He said now that the school has a permanent Superintendent, the search for a Business Manager will intensify.
Gerace was tapped by the school board after increasing pressure fell upon it to somehow remove former Superintendent Jeff Zwiebel. Zwiebel had fallen out of favor with many teachers within the district.
Last year, Zwiebel was placed on medical leave from the district and Gerace was installed as Superintendent on an interim basis. Zwiebel announced his retirement from Pottsville Area earlier this month.

She was at St. Clair for what a few years (maybe 2) and then jumped back to principle to be with her family and now wants to run a bigger district??? Glad PASD like everything else they do , just jump right into it. Will she Pay to Play???

I’m with concerned parent on this one, flipping jobs every one or two years is a bit of a red flag to me. I’ve seen plenty of people think they can make it outside the skook only to find out they couldn’t cut it in the real world and come crawling back with their tail between their legs. I’d be curious who the other candidates were and what their backgrounds were too. Maybe she’s the best one but I’ve always been a bit critical of this county’s fear of hiring outsiders
