Taylor Picone, the longshot Democrat challenger to State Rep. Jerry Knowles in the 124th District, will host a virtual town hall event on Tuesday evening.

The virtual town hall will be hosted on the Zoom teleconference platform. It’s being presented by the Berks County Democratic Party and Picone’s campaign.

Picone, of Hamburg, is likely a long shot to defeat the incumbent Knowles in the General Election in November.

Knowles hasn’t been opposed in an election for his State House seat since 2012, when he thumped Independent Dante Picciano by a 57% margin, garnering nearly 20,000 of the almost 25,000 votes cast that November.

That year, however, Knowles was given a stiff challenge in the GOP Primary by Larry Padora, beating him by just 1,100 votes.

In 2010, Knowles walloped Democrat Jeffrey Faust and Picciano, running as an Independent, in the General Election.

This is Picone’s first time running for office.

Earlier this year, Picone sharply criticized Knowles for allegedly calling his colleague, Rep. Brian Sims, of Philadlephia, a “little girl” during a debate on the House floor.

Knowles adamantly denied that allegation in an interview with The Canary and said Sims’ attack on him caused a great deal of stress on him and his staff due to threats from people outside the district.

He said he didn’t call Sims a “little girl” but instead criticized the outlandish Sims for attempting to dox teen girls who were protesting outside a Philadelphia Planned Parenthood clinic. During that incident, Sims went live on social media and encouraged his followers to find out the personal information of the protesting girls.

Rather than wait for that side of the story to be made public, Picone quickly took to social media and defended Sims from that bit of name-calling that apparently never happened and chastised Knowles.

Picone won his party’s nomination in the June Primary election.
