NWS: Wildfire Risk Elevated Today in Schuylkill County

Dry air, gusting winds likely today

National Weather Service says the combination of drying fine fuels, leaf litter, low humidity, and gusting winds today are increasing the risk of spreading wildfires.

The elevated risk for wildfires spreading is later this morning through the early evening hours on Monday (April 13), forecaters say. A low relative humidity (35-40%) combined with winds gusting up to 30 mph create ripe conditions for wildfires, especially across southern Pennsylvania.

Rain showers expected this morning likely will not have an impact on these conditions. Not only are the chances low for showers but any that occur likely will only bring several hundredths of an inch of rain.

Residents are being urged to use caution when handling potential ignition sources like machinery, cigarettes, or matches. Any fire that ignites has the potential to spread quickly under these weather conditions, NWS says.
