Police in Minersville say they’re adopting a zero-tolerance policy on what they label as concerning behavior at the borough’s Recreation Complex.
According to Police Chief Jeffrey Bowers, groups of juveniles have been congregating at the basketball court area of the complex and while there, they’re using profanities, damaging property, and getting confrontational with adults.
On Monday, Bowers says, one male was seen climbing on top of a basketball hoop (pictured above).
Under the department’s zero-tolerance policy, Bowers says no warnings will be issued. Any individual arrested for behavior like this will be charged accordingly, either with the County’s Juvenile Justice Dept. or at District Court. They also face a permanent ban from the rec complex and Minersville public swimming pool.
The chief says arrests are currently underway and police – both uniformed and in plain clothes – will be patrolling the rec complex going forward. Additionally, all bicycles and e-bikes are prohibited from being present or ridden at the rec complex. Bowers says this measure is a safety precaution due to recent injuries and some pedestrians nearly being hit.
Anyone that sees future violations at the rec complex is asked to phone police at 570-544-2333 or in an emergency, call 9-1-1. Photo and video evidence is also sought of any issues.
