Pottsville Mayor Tom Smith has declared a Level 2 Snow Emergency in the city ahead of the winter storm this weekend.
The emergency status and accompanying parking ban will go into effect at noon Saturday, Jan. 24, and are scheduled to remain in place until 7 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27.
National Weather Service has issued a WINTER STORM WARNING for Schuylkill County. Anywhere from 10-18 inches of snow is currently expected in the area.
Emergency Level 2: What to expect
Under a Level 2 emergency, roadways are considered hazardous due to blowing and drifting snow, with accumulations of 6 inches or more expected.
- Travel restrictions: Motorists are urged to use extreme caution. Residents should drive only if absolutely necessary. Employees are advised to contact their employers to verify if they need to report to work.
- Parking ban: A strict parking ban is in effect for all snow emergency routes and fire lanes.
Mandatory parking restrictions
Vehicles must be removed from designated snow emergency routes and fire lanes by noon Saturday. Vehicles remaining on these streets after the deadline are subject to towing at the owner’s expense.
Snow emergency routes (Do not park):
- Centre Street: Both sides.
- 12th Street: West side.
- North side only: East Norwegian, Mauch Chunk, Nichols and West Market streets.
- Laurel Boulevard: Centre to 2nd and 9th to 12th.
- 7th Street: Howard to Mahantongo streets.
- 16th Street: Market to Elk streets.
Fire lanes (Do not park): Vehicles must be removed from the entire length of these streets unless otherwise noted:
- 2nd Street: Laurel to Sanderson.
- 3rd Street: Sanderson to Morgan.
- 4th Street: Mahantongo to Boone.
- 6th Street: Mahantongo to Boone.
- 9th Street: Mahantongo to Pierce.
- 20th Street
- Deerfield Drive
- Morgan Avenue: 3rd to 7th (North side only).
- Pierce Street: 2nd to 4th.
- Sanderson Street
- Schuylkill Avenue: 2nd to 4th.
- Union Street: 2nd to 4th.
- Wolfe Street: Norwegian to Ridge.
Temporary parking locations
Residents living on affected streets may use the following temporary lots until the emergency is lifted:
- 3rd Street residents: Schuylkill County Courthouse juror lot.
- Centre Street residents: Arch and Union streets lots, Capitol parking deck, Mahantongo Street parking deck.
- East Norwegian residents: Arch and Union streets lots, Capitol parking garage, Good Samaritan Anderson Street lot.
- Mauch Chunk residents: Union Street lot.
- Nichols Street residents: North side of East Railroad.
- West Market Street residents: Pottsville Area School District Academic Center (lower lot), Arch and Union streets lots, Capitol and Mahantongo Street garages, east side of Yorkville Boyers lot.
Residents are also asked to help protect their neighborhoods by clearing snow from fire hydrants near their properties.
