Schuylkill County Man Seriously Injured in 11-Vehicle Pile-Up on Snowy I-78 Sunday

43-year-old Kursat Ilgun, of Orwigsburg, taken by Life Lion from scene of crash

A Schuylkill County motorist was seriously injured in an 11-vehicle crash on snowy Interstate 78 Sunday morning.

State Police say a tractor trailer driven by Abdukadir Ibrahim, 37, of Syracuse, New York, was moving too fast for the conditions on I-78, just east of Hausman Rd. in Greenwich Township, Berks County.

Ibrahim lost control of his vehicle and it slid, hitting the center concrete barrier of the interstate head-on.

That caused a chain-reaction crash in which 10 more vehicles crashed, including three more tractor-trailers.

Six drivers were taken to hospitals in Reading and the Lehigh Valley for treatment of their injuries. A total of 13 people, including passengers, sustained at least minor injuries in the pile-up.

Police say one of the motorists was 43-year-old Kursat Ilgun, of Orwigsburg. Ilgun had to be transported from the scene by Life Lion to Reading Hospital for suspected serious injuries.

Ilgun was alone in his Hyundai Kona at the time of the crash.

All but one vehicle had to be towed from the scene.

The crash closed Interstate 78’s westbound lane for more than seven hours, from just before 8 a.m. until just before 3 p.m.
