Another Schuylkill County municipality is looking into the possibility of allowing off-road vehicles onto select streets in the borough.
At their meeting last week, council members in Frackville voted unanimously to allow Solicitor Mark Semanchik to prepare and advertise an ordinance that would allow off-road vehicles to come off trails and onto some borough streets.
Council president Ron Jordan said the ordinance may look something similar to the one in Minersville when it’s done. That was the first municipality in Schuylkill County that wanted off-road riders to visit businesses in the borough and had to open up its streets to do so.
Jordan said Frackville would likely have a singular event to sort of test how it might work in Frackville. The Borough, he said, is working with Famous Reading Outdoors to see what streets off-road vehicles would be open to those riders.
“We want to bring business to Frackville,” Jordan tells The Canary. “They do want to eat at places and buy things.”
Frackville is also going to explore the possibility of having off-road vehicles on Lehigh Ave., which is a state road.
Jordan said that many of Frackville’s businesses are on the main street there so they have to figure out how to get off-roaders to the businesses there.
The goal is to have the ordinance prepared and open to feedback for council’s meeting on Feb. 12.
