Small Business Showcase: Magnet Magic By Jessica

Turning a setback into a creative venture, Jessica Hettler launched Magnet Magic By Jessica in early 2025.

Operating out of Pottsville, this new business transforms simple materials into handcrafted art. Jessica specializes in turning mini wooden blocks into polished, hand-painted magnets and ornaments, proving that resilience and creativity go hand in hand.

Learn more about Jessica’s journey from injury to entrepreneurship and her plans for the future of her business in this Q&A:

What inspired you to start this business, and how did your personal journey lead you here?

“I had lost my job after a work injury. After being a year out and losing so much money while also not being able to physically return to work (even elsewhere), I wanted to figure out a way to help myself and my family financially that wasn’t physically harmful to my existing injury. I decided to put my crafty, artsy side to the test and started creating beautiful magnets, while also adding ornaments to the list during the holidays.”

What unique products or services do you offer?

“My items are hand-crafted and hand-painted. My pieces start off with five mini Jenga pieces that I glue together and sand to smooth perfection. The customer then chooses a transfer decal of their liking from my inventory, and I do the rest, creating beautiful, inexpensive pieces. I also create pieces that I frequently add to my Facebook page.”

Can you share an interesting fact or story about your business that most people may not know?

“All my creations are created in my kitchen at my kitchen table.”

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a small business owner?

“I am fairly new at starting my small business. However, trial and error on products has been a challenge—such as which magnets to use (are they strong enough?), is two little ones better than one big one? Which brands and types of paint are best? Am I sure the wood glue and super glue I use are strong enough for a long-lasting hold? The best way I have overcome the worries is by the trial and error method; what has worked best stays, and what hasn’t won’t be repurchased.”

What do you want customers to experience when they interact with your business?

“I want my customers to be in awe as soon as they receive their product. I want them to know that it’s unique, strong, and the perfect gift for anyone. I want them fully happy with their purchase.”

Why should someone consider visiting or patronizing your business during the holiday season?

“I also offer turning my pieces into ornaments instead of magnets during the holidays.”

What are your future plans or dreams for your business?

“As of now, my plans are to just continue making magnets at a fair price. I want to eventually be able to move from my kitchen table to a nice crafting desk and workstation. I am extremely excited for my first craft show on December 13th at The Mansion House in Summit Hill.”

What advice would you give to someone wanting to start their own business in our community?

“I am new, and advice for me is extremely needed and appreciated, but the best I can say for now is to just go for it!”
