Corrections Officer at State Prison in Schuylkill County Facing COVID Benefits Fraud Charges

Allegedly used fake documents to get paid $20K+

A corrections officer at a state prison in Schuylkill County is accused of falsifying documents to collect more than $20,000 in COVID disability pay.

The Dept. of Corrections investigative division has filed felony theft and forgery charges against Alexander Meyers, 33, of Kingston at District Court in Frackville.

According to an affidavit, the Human Resources department at SCI-Frackville reported that Meyers submitted 12 excuses and 4 sets of lab results from a medical provider, all associated with COVID-19, between Jan. 3, 2024, and Nov. 2 of this year.

Those excuses and lab results garnered Meyers paid leave for 71 days, paying him $20,613.60 through the COVID-19 Enforcement Officer Disability Benefit, according to investigators.

The HR department at SCI-Frackville says it contacted the medical provider that purportedly provided Meyers with that documentation but they confirmed they were all fraudulent.

Investigators say they interviewed Meyers at SCI-Frackville earlier this month. During that interview, Meyers allegedly admitted the documents he provided to prison HR were fakes. He allegedly said he did have one legitimate excuse and set of lab results but then altered them to produce the 12 fakes.

Meyers reportedly told investigators he faked the COVID documents because he needed time off from work for personal reasons but that he was also sicks for some of the days he was out. He allegedly said he “didn’t go about it the right way.”

Meyers is now facing one third-degree felony count of theft and two second-degree felony counts of forgery.

What part is fake? Maybe the authorities aren’t telling the truth in their affidavit but that’s what we’re reporting and the source we’re citing. If they’re wrong and they got this wrong, we’ll report on that just like we reported on the allegations made. It’s definitely OK to do that.
