Thanksgiving Meals Distribution

In addition to those mobile food banks, Helping Harvest says it’s preparing 15,000 heat-and-eat Thanksgiving meals at its community kitchen in Reading. The meals will be distributed across the organization’s coverage area, in both Berks and Schuylkill counties.

This is the first year that Helping Harvest has created and distributed Thanksgiving heat-and-eat meals, the organization says, and those meals are mostly going to area seniors.

Heat-and-eat meals include smoked turkey with house-made gravy, sweet potato mash, green beans, and cranberry sauce.

The organization is also preparing Thanksgiving meal boxes, filled with items and ingredients that traditionally find their way on to holiday tables this time of year.

“We know that for some neighbors, particularly seniors, a heat-and-eat meal is more convenient and nutritionally appropriate for them,” Jay Worrall, president of Helping Harvest, says in a statement. “There are also a lot of families experiencing food insecurity in our community that still want to be able to cook their own holiday meal—we’re happy to be able to provide Thanksgiving boxes and turkeys or turkey breasts to them.”
