Shenandoah Manager: Attorney General’s Office Now Involved in “Financial Improprieties” Investigation

Shenandoah’s Borough Manager said Monday that he’s of the understanding that a member of the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office has been assigned to a potential criminal investigation into alleged “financial improprieties” by previous administrations.

Back in May, Shenandoah council members voted to hire a special counsel, former Schuylkill County Clerk of Courts Maria Casey, to investigate these alleged financial irregularities. In June, they set Casey’s rate at $250 per hour.

On Monday, Borough Manager Mike Cadau informed council members that he’s been in contact with Casey this week. Casey reportedly told Cadau that the Attorney General’s Office has assigned a person to “lead through the criminal investigation.”

Cadau did not divulge any details on which direction the investigation is headed but told council members, “Record retention is key to this whole process.”

He said that he’s gotten a good response from all council members except one but didn’t divulge that person’s name.

When Shenandoah originally agreed to bring Casey in as a special counsel, the vote was to hire her “regarding a bond matter, which will result in significant sums returned to the Borough.”

In the past, Cadau has zeroed in and alleged that his predecessor, Tony Sajone, committed financial errors and mismanagement that have cost Shenandoah tens of thousands of dollars.
