The Pennsylvania Dept. of Transportation is enforcing highway restrictions during the Jan. 29 snowstorm in eastern Pennsylvania.
The restrictions impact Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County. Roads that thousands of county residents use on a daily basis are also included.
The restrictions will be in place from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. However, PennDOT usually updates these restriction times based on the storm’s overall impact. During this time, the following vehicles will be banned from travel:
- Empty tractor trailers
- Commercial vehicles pulling double trailers
- Passenger vehicles pulling trailers
- RV/motorhomes
- Motorcycles
As much as 3-6 inches of snow is expected to fall starting early morning Tuesday and through the day and evening.
Here are the highways under restriction:
- Interstate 380 full length from I-81 to I-80;
- I-78 full length from I-81 to the New Jersey state line;
- I-80 from I-180 to the New Jersey state line;
- I-81 from I-83 to the New York state line;
- I-84 full length from I-81 to the New York state line; and
- I-476 (PA Turnpike, Northeast Ext.) from I-78 to Clarks Summit (exit 131).
PennDOT is urging all motorists to use caution during and after the storm. Unnecessary travel is discouraged.
“While many parts of the state may not see significant accumulations, it is critical to always be mindful of conditions and keep safety top of mind when driving in inclement weather,” PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards says in a statement. “Our crews are prepared to take on these conditions, and we call on the public to allow themselves extra time, drive according to conditions, and postpone travel if necessary.”
