At Least 30 Residents Evacuated from Tremont Apartment Building Due to Flooding

Sprinkler system malfunctions, according to dispatches from scene

A large-scale evacuation of an apartment building in Tremont is underway.

Major flooding caused by a faulty sprinkler system in the building forced residents at Tremont Station Apartments from their homes overnight Sunday into Monday.

Firefighters and other emergency personnel, including members of Tremont Ambulance, were called to the scene at N. Crescent St. at about 12:45 a.m. Monday.

At about 1 a.m., Tremont Fire Co. was attempting to reach the property owner and the American Red Cross was being called to assist with the evacuation and support.

One fire official said over emergency dispatches that at least 30 residents are being evacuated. They’ll be kept at a fire station in the borough for the time being.

Schuylkill County Emergency Management has been notified.

At about 1:30 a.m., a small bus was requested to help transport residents from the apartment building.

However, Emergency Management officials reportedly notified dispatchers that since STS vehicles run on natural gas, it would be an extended period of time before a vehicle could be dispatched to the scene due to the amount of time – at least a half-hour – it would take to warm-up the vehicle.

Shortly after learning that, all available personnel from Tremont Fire Co. and Donaldson Fire Co. were dispatched to the scene.

DEVELOPING STORY: We’ll have updates on this story as they’re available. This report was written from emergency dispatches.
