The America250 celebration is officially underway in Schuylkill County.
On Thursday, local officials and members of the community gathered at Schuylkill County Courthouse to get the semiquincentennial party started with a brief ceremony, a special flag presentation, and an outline of some of the events planned.
The highlight of America’s 250th birthday party in Schuylkill County will occur in the week leading up to Independence Day.
A fireworks display is planned for June 25 in Pottsville. That’s followed by a “once-in-a-generation” parade through the city on Saturday, June 27. The parade is being organized by Pottsville Area Development Corp.
All of Schuylkill County’s 67 municipalities are invited to join the parade by crafting floats that either showcase American history or what makes their communities unique.
Fire companies, civic groups, and schools are also invited to participate.

The goal is to “tell the story of Schuylkill County.” Municipalities will march in order of oldest to our newest formed. A float competition is also being organized to honor the best participants.
“The parade isn’t just about celebration, it’s about honoring where we came from and showcasing the strength and diversity of our county today,” PADCO executive director Savas Logothetides says.
Schuylkill County’s America250 parade steps off at 11 a.m. that day. It’ll be followed by an all-ages birthday party at Alvernia University in Pottsville.
