STORM CENTER: Schuylkill County Winter Storm Alerts

Municipal, county, and state announcements and service alerts from around Schuylkill County

Snow began falling overnight in Schuylkill County. Many residents are waking up to at least an inch or two (or more) of snow on the ground already.

Forecasts are still predicting between 10-17 inches of snow to fall through the course of this storm in Schuylkill County.

Ahead of the storm, municipalities and other organizations are in the readiness planning phase. The following is a list of announcements that have been made that affect you going into this weekend.

Ashland

A Snow Emergency in Ashland goes into effect at 10 p.m. Saturday and does expire until noon on Monday.

During the Snow Emergency, parking is prohibited on Hoffman Blvd., from Brock St. to Centre St., and on Centre St., from Front St. to 23rd St.

Any vehicles not moved will be ticketed and towed.


Blue Mountain School District

Due to weather, the regular meeting of Blue Mountain school board will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29 at the Middle School.


Coaldale

Mayor Daniel Weiksner has declared a Local Disaster Emergency in Coaldale beginning today. It authorizes immediate and coordinated action by borough officials, police, emergency responders, and public works personnel.

Coaldale residents are urged to follow instructions from emergency officials, avoid unnecessary travel where conditions are impacted, and monitor official Borough communications for updates.

This declaration remains in effect until Feb. 1, unless it’s lifted sooner.


Cressona

A Snow Emergency is in effect in Cressona from 8 p.m. Saturday until noon on Tuesday.

Vehicles parked along a Snow Route must be removed or they’ll be towed, Borough officials warn.

The Snow Emergency Routes in Cressona are: River St., Ash St., Railroad St., Front St., Schuylkill St., and Graeff St.

Cressona officials say they plan to plow curb-to-curb during the upcoming storm and the goal is to get as many cars off the street as possible to allow that to happen.

Parking during the Snow Emergency is available at the Masonic Lodge on S. Third St., the Walnut St. lot, at Goodwill Fire Co., and at Borough Hall.

Officials also warn that it is illegal to throw, shovel, or move snow from their sidewalks or driveways into the public streets.

UPDATE: Marsha Drive Residents — Good Will Fire Dept. will be plowing Marsha Drive for this storm and only this storm, the Borough notes.

The plow will be plowing one way down the street (on the right side as you come down the hill) so residents along Marsha Drive must move their vehicles by 8 p.m. Saturday.

If vehicles are parked on both sides of Marsha Drive, plowing a path will not be possible and will not be attempted.

The Borough notes that a volunteer has offered their services to plow this street as it can not plow a road that is not a Borough-owned street.


Frackville

A Snow Emergency is in effect in Frackville from 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, until 8 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27.

During a Snow Emergency, parking is prohibited on all Snow Emergency Routes in the borough. Driving on Snow Emergency Routes is limited only to vehicles with snow tires or chains.

Parking is banned on these Snow Emergency Routes in Frackville:

  • Lehigh Ave.: Entire length from Borough line to Borough line
  • Oak St.: Entire length from Borough line to Borough line

Parking on a Snow Emergency Route during a Snow Emergency can result in a fine up to $15 (plus court costs). Driving on a Snow Emergency Route without snow tires or chains is a fine up to $25 (plus court costs).


Girardville

When 3 or more inches of snow falls in Girardville, the following snow removal protocols go into place:

No parking on the first day of the storm on the following streets: Preston Ave., Lower Railroad St., Beech St., and the even-numbered sides of Second, A, B, C, and Ogden streets.

No parking on the second day of the storm on the odd-numbered sides of Second, A, B, C, and Ogden streets.

These restrictions remain in effect until snow removal is completed.


Kline Township

Kline Township has issued a Snow Parking Ban.

The parking ban is effective from 8 p.m. Saturday until further notice.

Please follow the posted street Snow Parking Ban signs. There is no parking on the odd-numbered side of the street, or as stated on your street.

Parking is also prohibited in alleys. Enforcement by local police will be in effect.


Mahanoy Area School District

The school district campus is closed Sunday for all activities scheduled.

Assuming the storm does pan out as planned, there will be no school on Monday (a traditional snow day).

On Tuesday and Wednesday, if necessary, Flexible Instruction Days will be held, according to a letter sent to parents from Superintendent Joie Green.


Mahanoy City

A Snow Ban is in effect from 10 p.m Saturday, Jan. 24 until 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26 in Mahanoy City.

During this time, there will be no parking on Centre, Main, Liberty Hill, and South streets in the borough. Police warn that vehicles parked on these streets during the Snow Ban will be ticketed and towed.


McAdoo

The Borough has prohibited parking in any alleyway starting at 9 p.m. Saturday until 6 p.m. Monday.

The parking ban also includes E. and W. Blaine streets as well as N. and S. Kennedy Drive.

Any resident hiring a private contractor to remove snow from their property must place the snow on their own property or have it hauled out of the Borough.

Residents removing snow from their sidewalks or shoveling out parking spots must also place that snow on their own property. The Borough says throwing snow on the streets will be cited.


Middleport

A parking ban along Snow Emergency Routes in Middleport go into effect at 7 p.m. Saturday. Snow Emergency Routes include Kaska St. and Walnut St. in the borough.


Minersville

Minersville has declared a Snow Emergency.

The Snow Emergency will be in effect from 10 a.m. Sunday until 6 p.m. Monday.

There will be no parking on Sunbury, Front and S. Third streets during this time. Any vehicles parked on these streets will be ticketed and towed at the owners’ expense.

Residents are reminded that they can not plow, shovel or blow any snow or ice from private property onto a public street, crosswalk, transit stop, or sidewalk. Snow and/or ice can not be placed on or within a 3-foot radius of any fire hydrant or within 15 feet of any intersection.

There shall be no placing of chairs, buckets, or other devices to save shoveled parking space.

Any person using motorized equipment/vehicles, i.e. snow plows, ATVs, tractors, loaders, etc., are prohibited from piling any snow on a street. All persons using motorized equipment/vehicles to move snow are required to remove the snow from the street.


North Schuylkill School District

North Schuylkill School District campus will be closed for all activities on Sunday.

Right now, if the weather forecast pans out, there will be no school on Monday, a traditional snow day. Tuesday and Wednesday will be Virtual Learning days. This is not a final decision, just if snow falls as expected. Updates to follow.

The following information comes from the school district regarding potential virtual learning days:

  • No live instruction will be held, except as needed for attendance.
  • Junior/Senior High School: Students should log on at 7:39 AM and report to their first-period Google Classroom.
  • North Schuylkill Elementary School: Students should log on at 9:00 AM and report to their homeroom teacher’s Google Classroom.
  • Teachers will post assignments and directions through Google Classroom.
  • Teachers will be available to support students throughout the day via email and Google Classroom.


Orwigsburg

The Borough of Orwigsburg has declared a State of Emergency due to the snowstorm. The State of Emergency goes into effect at 8 p.m. Saturday and expires at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Snow Emergency routes include all of Market St., North and South Warren St., and S. Liberty St.

During the emergency, cars can not park on the odd side of the street on an odd numbered day (Sunday is the 25th there is no parking on the odd side of the street) and on the even days no parking on the even side.


Palo Alto

Effective at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, there will be no parking on the north (odd-numbered) side of Savory St. in Palo Alto until further notice.

Vehicles will be towed at the owner’s expense. Do not park in yellow zones.

The Borough is also asking residents to help clear fire hydrants of snow by shoveling the front and sides.


Pine Grove

A Snow Emergency is in effect for Pine Grove starting at 11 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, until 8 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27.

When a snow emergency is issued, vehicles parked along a snow route shall be promptly removed from the route. No vehicles shall remain on the snow routes until the snow emergency has been lifted.

If the vehicles are not removed from the Snow Emergency Routes, they will be ticketed and towed.

The following streets are designated as Snow Emergency Routes:

  1. E. & W. Mill Street
  2. E. Pottsville Street
  3. Wood Street
  4. North & South Tulpehocken Street
  5. Snyder Avenue
  6. Orchard Street
  7. Spruce Street

There will be parking available in the lot behind Borough Hall.


Pine Grove Area School District

The school district campus is closed to all activities on Sunday.


Port Carbon

Port Carbon has declared a Disaster Emergency due to the incoming snowstorm. That is in effect from Saturday through Friday, Jan. 30.

An Emergency Parking Ban is also in place for the following streets starting at 8 p.m. Saturday. All vehicles must be moved by this time: 

  • N. Coal St. EVEN side of street from Pike St. to Spring St.
  • S. Coal St. BOTH sides from Pike St. to Miller Factory ( Rt.209)
  • Jackson St. ODD side from S. Coal St. to Commerce St.
  • Market St. BOTH sides from Pike St. to 4th St.
  • Mill St. ODD side from Pike St. to East Washington St.
  • Pike St. BOTH sides from Mill St. to Market St. (Turkey Hill)
  • Pottsville St. BOTH sides from Commerce to Pike St.
  • 3rd St. EVEN side from Lillian St. to East Norwegian Twp. line

During the storm, the Port Bar parking lot located on Coal St. will be available for residents to temporarily park vehicles during the Snow Emergency.

Residents are urged to check the Port Carbon Facebook page for future updates.


Porter Township

The township is asking residents living along Grand Ave. to remove vehicles from the street and park them on the side streets or on their own property


Pottsville

Mayor Tom Smith has declared a Level 2 Snow Emergency in Pottsville.

The emergency status and accompanying parking ban will go into effect at noon Saturday, Jan. 24, and are scheduled to remain in place until 7 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Saint Clair

From 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, until 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26, there will be no parking on Hancock St. and Second St. in the borough.


Schuylkill County Government/Courts

Schuylkill County government and all courts will be closed on Monday, Jan. 26, due to weather.

This closure affects Schuylkill County government and all County offices.

Additionally, all Schuylkill County courts are closed. Matters pending before courts will be rescheduled.

Please check with District Courts for new times and dates for any proceedings that were originally scheduled for Monday.


Schuylkill Haven Borough

A Snow Emergency Parking Ban goes into effect at 8 p.m. Saturday in Schuylkill Haven.

At that time, the Borough expects to activate its emergency snow removal procedures. All vehicles parked along designated Snow Emergency Routes must be relocated by 9 p.m. Saturday. Vehicles not moved by 9 p.m. may be ticketed or towed.

The following Borough streets are designated Snow Emergency Routes:

  • N. Garfield
  • Center Ave.
  • Dock St.
  • Haven St.
  • Paxson Ave.
  • E. Main St.
  • Ave. A (Main St. to Market St.)
  • W. Main St.
  • Union St. (Parkway to Ave. A)
  • S. Margaretta St.
  • St. Peter St. (Main to Union St.)
  • St. Peter St. (Liberty to William St.)
  • St. John St.
  • William St.
  • E. Liberty St.
  • Parkway
  • Columbia St.
  • N. Berne St.
  • S. Berne St.

Schuylkill Haven Area School District

According to a letter to parents and guardians from Superintendent Shawn Fitzpatrick, “If school is closed on Monday, it would constitute our third traditional snow day, which would be made up later this spring. Should winter weather conditions persist or worsen as predicted, the district may begin utilizing Flexible Instruction Days (FID) as early as Tuesday, in accordance with our approved plan through the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Additional details and guidance will be communicated as decisions are made.”


Shenandoah

Shenandoah has announced a Snow Removal Emergency and Snow Emergency Route. This emergency declaration goes into effect at noon on Saturday and expires at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

During this time, the Shenandoah Police Department is authorized to strictly enforce parking regulations. Any vehicles found obstructing snow removal or emergency access in restricted zones will be subject to ticketing and towing at the owner’s expense. Residents are advised to limit travel in the affected areas and monitor Borough communications for further updates.

Parking is strictly prohibited on the following Snow Emergency Routes:

  • Center Street: Between White Street and West Street
  • Main Street: From Washington Street to Laurel Street
  • All public alleyways within the Borough

Tamaqua

Street Snow Removal: During the winter season, the borough may conduct snow removal on various streets. Schedules will be posted the day prior on the borough’s Facebook page and at www.tamaquaborough.com, with start times varying based on conditions. Residents must move their vehicles from these posted areas; failure to do so will result in the vehicle being ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense.

Property Owner Responsibilities: Property owners must clear a three-foot-wide path on their sidewalks within 24 hours after a storm ends. Failure to do so may result in a $25 fine for the first offense, with higher fines for subsequent violations. Residents are prohibited from throwing snow into the street, intersections, or onto storm drains, as this creates hazardous conditions and may result in fines. However, clearing snow around fire hydrants and storm drains is encouraged.


Tower City

Mayor John Forsythe has issued a Snow Emergency in the Borough. All vehicles must be moved off Grand Ave. by 4 p.m. Saturday. This will be enforced by police.


Tremont

Mayor Justin Moeller has issued a Declaration of Disaster Emergency. It goes into effect at 5 p.m. Saturday and expires at 8 p.m. Monday.

Parking of motor vehicles is prohibited along all snow emergency routes during this time. Residents MUST move their vehicles.  Any vehicle parked along these routes during the Declaration period will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Snow Emergency Routes include:

  • Clay St.
  • North St.
  • Spring St.
  • East Laurel St.
  • West Laurel St.
  • East Line St. to Union St.
  • East Main St. to Union St.
  • West Main St.

The Borough also asks residents for help with making sure hydrants are clear of snow and ice and to assist the elderly by helping them clear their sidewalks.  


West Mahanoy Township

Township supervisors chairman Paul Martin signed a disaster declaration, effective since noon Saturday, in West Mahanoy Township.

This declaration empowers the township’s Emergency Management Coordinator to “take all appropriate action needed to alleviate the effects of the disaster.” It also allows for the emergency hiring of temporary workers, equipment rental, purchase of material and supplies, and entering of contracts and agreements to meet the demands of the emergency.
