Welcome to the Canary Rescue Crew! In 2026, we’re stepping up our pet adoption feature (formerly Furiday Friends) and highlighting a pet every day from various shelters and rescues in Schuylkill County.
Today’s featured pet is Shaggy, a 2-year-old Perro de Presa Canario with the size of a guardian and the heart of a loyal companion.
Shaggy arrived at Hillside SPCA as a stray and was severely emaciated, a clear sign that life had not been kind to him.
Despite that rough start, he has shown himself to be a gentle giant who bonds deeply with the people he trusts.
He knows how to sit and give paw and enjoys human interaction, especially when it comes with calm leadership and consistency.
Shaggy is not a fan of cats or small dogs, and he is not yet house-trained, so he will need an adopter who understands large-breed dogs and is willing to put in the work. In return, Shaggy offers unwavering loyalty and a natural instinct to protect his home and the people in it.
With structure, patience, and a confident handler, Shaggy has the potential to be an incredible companion and a devoted house protector. He is ready for someone who sees past his size and understands the gentle soul underneath.
