Schuylkill County Woman Cited for Having Bowl in Pocket While Biking Through a Sobriety Checkpoint

Results of checkpoint released, too

A Schuylkill County woman is facing a drug paraphernalia charge after she allegedly biked through a DUI checkpoint with a bowl in her pocket.

State Police say they were working at a sobriety checkpoint along Sillyman St. in Cressona on Nov. 21. Shortly after 10 p.m., a woman – identified as 54-year-old Lisa Gilbert – approached a patrol vehicle from behind on her bicycle.

Gilbert reportedly stopped by the driver’s door and began to have a conversation with a Trooper.

Police say they smelled alcohol coming from Gilbert. She allegedly admitted she’d been drinking with a family member that night and had a cup on her bike that contained alcohol.

However, Gilbert passed sobriety tests but police say they noticed a “bulge” from a pocket on her pants. Gilbert reportedly told police that it was a metal bowl she used to smoke marijuana.

Police say they collected the bowl and placed it in their patrol vehicle. The alcoholic beverage in Gilbert’s cup on her bike was spilled out on the road and Gilbert was released from the scene.

Last week, police charged Gilbert with a misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia as well as summary offenses for restrictions on alcoholic beverages and disorderly conduct.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for District Court in Orwigsburg on Feb. 10.

During that DUI checkpoint, police say they made six DUI arrests, two busts for drug possession, and one for a PFA violation.
