Small Business Showcase: Spicy Paws Dog Training

Science-Based Training For Every Dog

Located on North Front Street in St. Clair, Spicy Paws Dog Training is a haven for dogs who might struggle in traditional environments.

Owner Ashlee Correll established the business in 2024 with a specific focus on behavior modification using modern, science-based methods.

As a Pat Miller Certified Trainer who has completed the Aggression in Dogs Master Course, Ashlee specializes in helping “spicy” dogs and their owners find confidence and connection.

In this Showcase Q&A, Ashlee discusses the family promise that launched her career, the lack of regulation in the dog training industry, and her unique private facility rentals.

What inspired you to start this business, and how did your personal journey lead you here?

A family member passed away and left us his dog, Dolly, with the promise we would care for her. Dolly had quite a few behavior challenges which prompted me to start learning how I could help her. I pursued training from top experts in the field and was amazed at how much progress Dolly made even though she is a senior dog. I wanted to share that knowledge with others and help them build that communication system to help their dogs thrive the way Dolly has.

What unique products or services do you offer that can’t be found elsewhere in our community?

I am a Pat Miller Certified Trainer, an AKC CGC Approved Evaluator, and have completed Michael Shikashio’s Aggression in Dogs Master Course. I specialize in behavior modification training using modern science-based methods. I offer training at my facility and also in-home within 30 miles of Auburn, PA.

I also offer a unique “Doggie’s Day Out” session where clients can have private access to my facility and equipment. This ensures that EVERY dog has an opportunity for a fun adventure out of the house without worry of other dogs or people. This is great for owners of dogs who can’t visit typical dog-friendly places due to behavior concerns.

Can you share an interesting fact or story about your business that most people may not know?

While looking for help for Dolly, I learned that dog training is an unregulated industry, meaning there are no education standards or experience required to call yourself a dog trainer. This is why I personally pursued—and continue pursuing—education and certifications myself from top industry leaders so that I can provide my customers with the best service possible.

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a small business, and how did you overcome it?

My biggest challenge as a small business is getting my name and message out to people. I only opened my training facility in October, so it is still very new!

How does your business contribute to the local community or participate in community events?

Spicy Paws has regularly donated prizes for local non-profits as well as connecting with other local dog businesses to build a network for my clients.

What do you want customers to experience when they interact with your business?

I want every customer to walk away feeling empowered and confident, not just knowing what to do, but truly understanding “why” their dog is behaving the way they are. My goal is for clients to feel supported, respected, and heard, and to know that they have a safe, judgment-free space to learn, grow, and enjoy quality time with their dogs. When people interact with Spicy Paws, I want them to leave feeling hopeful, informed, and excited about the progress ahead.

Is your facility accessible to all owners and pets?

Yes, the parking lot and training facility are handicap accessible, and training tasks can be modified to suit an individual’s needs.
