Small Business Showcase: Schach’s Sweets

Hobby becomes family-run business in Tremont

Located on North Pine St. in Tremont, Schach’s Sweets offers a sweet convenience that is hard to beat: a 24/7 self-serve stand.

Established in 2020 by Suzanne Schach, this family-run bakery has quickly become a local staple known for its handmade peanut rolls, nostalgic candies, and community spirit.

What began as a kitchen hobby has grown into a vibrant business that blends modern convenience with old-fashioned baking traditions.

Schach discusses the evolution of her bakery, the challenges of sourcing premium chocolate, and the unique family dynamic behind the business in this Small Business Showcase from Coal Region Canary.

What inspired you to start this business, and how did your personal journey lead you here?

“Schach’s Sweets began with a simple love of baking and a desire to bring a little extra happiness to everyday life. What started as a fun hobby in a home kitchen — sharing cookies with family, gifting treats to friends, and baking for community events — quickly grew into something much bigger as more and more people fell in love with the unique flavors and homemade charm. Encouraged by the excitement and support from the community, we took a leap from tradition to entrepreneurship. From early mornings rolling dough to late nights perfecting recipes, every step has been fueled by passion, creativity, and a belief that good food can bring people together.”

What unique products or services do you offer that can’t be found elsewhere in our community?

“Schach’s Sweets stands out for its always-open self-serve stand, making it easy for customers to grab their favorite treats anytime. We are proud to offer a lineup of signature items, including our unbeatable peanut rolls and handmade chocolates. These peanut rolls are unlike any others—perfectly sweet, generously coated in crunchy peanuts, and filled with smooth buttercream. We also feature David’s Sauce, a special addition crafted by my 15-year-old son. It brings a bold, flavorful twist that pairs perfectly with countless dishes—a delicious reminder that talent runs in the family.”

Can you share an interesting fact or story about your business that most people may not know?

“Most people don’t realize that Schach’s Sweets is a small, family-run business where every treat is handmade with care. From rolling peanut rolls to mixing gourmet brownies, a few dedicated family members work side by side to create each batch. This hands-on approach ensures every item is crafted with love, attention to detail, and a personal touch.”

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a small business, and how did you overcome it?

“One of the biggest challenges we have faced is rising supply costs and availability, especially for chocolate—a key ingredient, as we use nearly a ton each year. Over the past few years, the cost of high-quality chocolate has tripled, and finding consistent, premium sources has been difficult. To overcome this, the team has become resourceful and persistent, sourcing chocolate from multiple trusted outlets and carefully planning inventory to maintain quality without compromising our signature treats.”

How does your business contribute to the local community or participate in community events?

“Schach’s Sweets is dedicated not only to serving delicious treats, but also to strengthening the community it proudly calls home. We actively support local causes through fundraisers for local disaster relief efforts—including contributions that helped support many fire victims in Tremont during times of urgent need. We also support youth and community organizations by hosting and participating in fundraisers that benefit local sports teams, school groups, and youth programs.”

What do you want customers to experience when they interact with your business?

“At Schach’s Sweets, every treat is designed to bring deliciousness and a touch of nostalgia. From handcrafted peanut rolls to gourmet brownies, and even classic clear toy candies, customers can enjoy flavors that delight the palate while evoking warm, childhood memories. Each bite is a small moment of joy.”

Why should someone consider visiting or patronizing your business during the holiday season?

“This holiday season, Schach’s Sweets is the go-to destination for both everyday favorites and personalized festive treats. While customers can enjoy signature peanut rolls, chocolates, and brownies, we specialize in custom orders and seasonal creations, making it easy to delight loved ones with unique, handcrafted confections tailored to any celebration.”

What are your future plans or dreams for your business?

“We are excited for the future, with plans to expand the shop and add a small indoor retail space. This expansion will allow the family-run business to welcome more customers, showcase our full range of handmade treats, and create a cozy, inviting space where visitors can enjoy the sweet experience year-round.”

What advice would you give to someone wanting to start their own business in our community?

“My advice to anyone wanting to start their own business in our community? Go for it. I had doubts along the way, but the key is to never give up. Even small ventures, like my son’s creation, David’s Sauce, show that following your passion can lead to something truly special. Dreams are worth pursuing—you never know where they might take you.”
