Cressona’s goal of raising $1.2 million to restore its public swimming pool got a massive boost right at the launch.
On Friday, the family behind Miller Bros. Construction committed $100,000 in matching funds on donations to Cressona’s capital campaign.
The goal is to restore the Cressona Pool that was forced to close for this past summer season due to structural issues caused by a harsh winter and its overall age.
Becky Hoover, daughter of Jim and Michelle Miller, announced her family’s generous donation at a kickoff to the Cressona capital campaign.
With the $1.2 million, borough officials and community leaders hope to restore and improve the Cressona Pool so it’ll serve generations into the future.
Cressona Pool first opened in 1959.

“We’ve seen just how much it means to this community,” Hoover says. “This pool is more than a place to cool off. It’s a place where memories are made, friendships grow, and the spirit of Cressona truly comes alive.”
Hoover says when her family heard about the decision to close the pool earlier this year, they wanted to step up to help.
In comments to The Canary, Hoover says, “We just believe in this community. It’s generational. We grew up here. We helped build the field house. We believe in the children of this area. If you don’t have something for them to do, they will leave. They’ll find something negative to do. We have to give them something positive. It’s for the kids. It’s for the families.”
Cressona is looking to raise enough money from private donors to avoid any extra time that accompanies accepting public grants, like needing to get feasibility studies done prior to reconstruction.
Since it was decided to keep the pool closed this summer, the Borough has been in talks with two pool engineering companies to design a modern swimming facility.
