Saint Clair Area school officials have announced dates of public presentations for the three Schuylkill County school districts vying to be the new home of the community’s incoming high school students.
Earlier this year, Saint Clair Area school board members approved receiving bids from local school districts to become the home of their graduating 8th graders. Saint Clair students have been completing their secondary education at Pottsville Area High School since 1989.
Pottsville is one of three districts to respond to Saint Clair’s Request for Proposals. The two districts have spent the summer exchanging words, mostly through the media, on the status of their relationship. North Schuylkill and Schuylkill Haven Area also submitted proposals.
Saint Clair is seeking an agreement in which it pays a per-student tuition to another district to accept its incoming high school students. It believes it’s no longer getting a fair deal from Pottsville.
On Sept. 24, Pottsville Area will be the first district to host a tour and put on a presentation of what the district has to offer Saint Clair Area students. Schuylkill Haven Area will host Saint Clair for a presentation and tour the following day, Sept. 25.
Saint Clair’s road show will conclude with a tour and presentation at North Schuylkill on Sept. 29.
Each tour and presentation is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the prospective host school district.
In a letter to parents and the community, Saint Clair Area Superintendent Thomas McLaughlin says if there’s enough interest from the community, a bus ride from the borough to each school can be arranged. Those interested in getting transported to each school can email transportation@saintclairsd.org to reserve a seat on a bus. Buses will leave for each school at 5:30 p.m. on the day of the tour.
According to Saint Clair Area school board president Michael Holobetz, a vote on which school will host the district’s incoming high school students will happen by November.
