Pottsville has begun the process of seeking a new City Solicitor but it’s likely a new lawyer will not take that role until next year.
At its special meeting earlier this week, City Council members voted unanimously to request proposals from attorneys to become Pottsville’s next Solicitor.
As its resolution reads, the City will accept proposals and review the ones received in November. Those proposals will be forwarded to a new administration, which takes office in January 2026.
In April, longtime Solicitor Tim Pellish retired from the position of City Solicitor. Deputy Solicitor Ed Brennan assumed the role of interim Solicitor. Brennan also serves as Solicitor of Pottsville’s Redevelopment Authority and the Greater Pottsville Area Sewer Authority.
This November, the balance of power on City Council is up for election. Current Councilmen Andy Wollyung and Tom Wood along with Controller Mike Weres will appear on the Democrat ballot.
Wollyung is running for Mayor. Wood and Weres are running for two open council seats. Weres was elected Controller in 2023. Wood was appointed to City Council late last year after former Mayor Dave Clews resigned due to health issues, leaving a vacancy on the board after then-Councilman Mark Atkinson was appointed Mayor.
Atkinson resigned earlier this year, also citing health issues. Cat Mahon was appointed to City Council several months ago after then-Councilman William Messaros was appointed Mayor.
Wollyung, Wood, and Weres will be facing Republican challengers Tom Smith (Mayor), and council candidates Jonathan Marsh and Scott Price.
