Schuylkill County Man Jailed on Domestic Assault Charges

Neighbor called 9-1-1

A Pottsville man was sent to Schuylkill County Prison following an alleged domestic abuse incident in the city last week.

According to information released by police in Pottsville, officers were called to a home in the 700 block of W. Norwegian St. shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 22.

Police say they were responding to a 9-1-1 call from a neighbor who said they could hear a man next door hitting his wife. The caller said they could hear the man saying, “I’m gonna choke you out,” and that they could hear the impact of his assault on the victim.

Police say they knocked on the door to the home where the alleged assault was occurring and met with Leonard Rogers, who was out of breath and sweating profusely. In the background, police say they could see a woman in distress.

Rogers was asked to step outside and police say they spoke with the victim of the alleged assault, who had visible injuries, including two black eyes, a lump on her forehead and two large bruises.

Rogers reportedly told police that he was “having an argument with my wife.”

The victim reportedly told police that her injuries were a result of hitting her forehead on the counter and banging her eye on a cabinet. She was also sweating profusely and trembling, police say.

The home was in complete disarray, police say. Broken glass was seen on the kitchen and living room floor, furniture and a lamp were knocked over.

When police asked the victim if Rogers had hit her, she denied it and said she was “very clumsy.” She reportedly said that Rogers “can’t get into trouble. He needs to go to work.”

The victim was taken by ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Rogers was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge James Reiley and charged with simple assault and harassment. Reiley set bail at 10% of $15,000 and committed Rogers to Schuylkill County Prison, where he remains, according to court records.
