DEP: Code Orange Air Quality Declaration for Schuylkill County in Effect on Wednesday

Sensitive populations urged to use caution outdoors

Schuylkill County will once again be under a Code Orange Air Quality Action Day on Wednesday due to persistent Canadian wildfire smoke.

A similar declaration was in effect on Tuesday.

The Code Orange Air Quality Action Day is issued by the Dept. of Environmental Protection. Other counties covered by this declaration include: Tioga, Union, Snyder, Northumberland, Lycoming, Tioga, Montour, Columbia, Sullivan, Bradford, Susquehanna, Wayne, Wyoming, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike, and Carbon.

DEP says smoke from Canadian wildfires will persist across the Code Orange area on Wednesday. Average Particulate Matter readings of 2.5 micrometers are expected.

Sensitive groups of the population including children, older adults, and those with respiratory conditions should avoid heavy outdoor activity during this time, DEP says.

On a Code Orange Air Quality Action Day, young children, the elderly, and those with respiratory problems, such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis, are especially vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and should limit outdoor activities.

You can check air quality conditions in Schuylkill County by navigating to www.airnow.gov.

Residents and businesses within the Air Quality Action Day areas are strongly encouraged to voluntarily help reduce fine particulate matter air pollution. DEP says ways to do that include avoiding the use of gas-powered lawn and garden equipment and not burning leaves, trash, and other materials.
