The days of having fun, novelty license plates on the front of your vehicle in Pennsyvania could be coming to an end.
A state Senator who represents part of Berks County has circulated a co-sponsorship memo indicating she intends to introduce legislation that would require a front license plate on vehicles in Pennsylvania.
Sen. Katie Muth (D-44), says in her memo, “Requiring a license plate on the front of a car will improve vehicle identification and enhance public safety by helping law enforcement officers, witnesses, or cameras more easily and quickly identify a vehicle. A front license plate can also improve toll collections.”
Muth adds that there are many incidents in which only the front of a vehicle is captured by cameras or witnesses.
There are currently 29 states, along with the District of Columbia, that require front license plates, according to a report from Autolist.com:
- California
- Colorado
- Hawaii
- Idaho
- Illinois
- Iowa
- Maine
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- Minnesota
- Missouri
- Montana
- Nebraska
- Nevada
- New Hampshire
- New Jersey
- New York
- North Dakota
- Oregon
- Rhode Island
- South Dakota
- Texas
- Utah
- Vermont
- Virginia
- Washington
- Wisconsin
- Wyoming

I cant even get the State to replace 1 faded and unreadable plate. Imagine if they had to replace 2?
This is just another dumb waste of money. Let me guess you will force everyone to buy their second plate at the cost of 200 bucks? Extra money will go into the same fund that was going to eliminate property taxes right?

So would this law require a front & back? The way I’m reading it just seems like you just need to place it on the front instead of the back? Is it required now to have them on the back or are you allowed to have it on either front or back and that’s acceptable? Because it having to pay for 2 now or ridiculous. Especially how they just keep raising the price constantly.

It would be front and back. It’s on us for not making that more clear in the article.
