Schuylkill County Woman Charged in Bad Check Scheme

Said the money was being used to support orphans

A Schuylkill County woman is facing theft charges after police say she cashed a fraudulent check at a local bank and then tried to do it again.

On Tuesday, police in Branch Township say they received word from Mid Penn Bank that it was the victim of a theft.

On May 22, the bank says Beverly Nally, 64, of Heritage Hills, Norwegian Township, depositied a check in the amount of $4,900 into a new account she’d opened at Mid Penn Bank. The check she deposited was reportedly drawn from a Bank of America account in Nally’s name and written to herself. In the memo section of the check, Nally reportedly marked that it was for “Bills”.

The next day, Nally withdrew $4,200 of that money.

A month earlier, Nally opened an account with Mid Penn Bank and waited 30 days to cash the check in order to get the money she wanted the next day. Had she tried to cash the check immediately after opening the account at Mid Penn Bank, she would have had to wait seven days to withdraw money from it.

On May 28, Nally once again tried to deposit a similar check for $4,500. It was once again issued by and made payable to Nally. The check was also marked in the memo section for “Bills”.

However, when Nally tried to deposit the second check, the bank refused to accept it, police say.

Mid Penn Bank staff confronted Nally about her activity. She reportedly said she was using the money to support orphans and agreed to pay back the money she’d taken. However, since that moment, the bank says it’s lost contact with Nally and no money has been returned.

Police have charged Nally with theft by deception and receiving stolen property, both felonies, as well as a misdemeanor offense of bad checks.
