Schuylkill County Nursing Home Resident Accused of Selling Meth to Another Resident

A Schuylkill County nursing home resident is behind bars after police say he sold a bag of meth to another resident.

According to court documents, police in Orwigsburg were dispatched to the Orwigsburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Wednesday morning after a small bag containing a white powdery substance and a straw were found under the mattress of one of its residents.

Police say they confirmed that the powdery substance was methamphetamine and questioned the resident who had it under his mattress. Eventually, police say the resident told an administrator at the facility that he purchased the meth from Joseph Hunt, 70, who also lives at Orwigsburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, for $10.

When questioned by police, Hunt initially denied having anything to do with selling the meth but reportedly allowed police to search his room. During the search, Hunt allegedly threatened to leave the facility. Police say they then asked if they could search Hunt, specifically his pockets and wallet.

Hunt them removed a wallet from his pocket and placed his fingers inside two pockets in it, showing police there was nothing in it. However, as police questioned more, Hunt then started to remove a clear, plastic baggie with an unknown substance in it, which police believe was meth. Hunt reportedly told police he’d forgotten it was in there.

During questioning, Hunt reportedly told police that he didn’t charge the other resident for the meth because “he owned me money.”

Hunt has been charged with possession with intent to deliver and drug possession. He was arraigned before District Magistrate Judge AJ Serina on April 9 and remanded to Schuylkill County Prison after being unable to post 10% of $25,000 bail. A preliminary hearing before Serina is currently scheduled for April 15.
