Minersville Will Offer Local Swimming Discount to Cressona, Schuylkill Haven Residents

Cressona Pool lifeguards will have a chance at jobs in Minersville, too.

Residents in Cressona and Schuylkill Haven affected by the closure of the Cressona Pool in 2025 will get an offer for discounted rates on swimming from another Schuylkill County municipality.

On Tuesday, Minersville Mayor Sean Palmer said he wants to offer residents of Cressona and Schuylkill Haven the season pass rate that his constituents get.

Earlier this week, Borough Council members in Cressona voted unanimously to keep the public swimming pool there closed for the entire 2025 season as they mull a massive repair bill to fix damages caused over the winter. It’s likely that Cressona will need to come up with $200,000 to make the necessary repairs to open the pool in the future.

Minersville would offer those who typically go to Cressona Pool the local rate for season passes. The borough does not have a special local rate for daily admission like Cressona Pool offers so this discount would only apply to season passes.

Borough Council members unanimously approved the motion to adopt the local season pass rates for Cressona and Schuylkill Haven residents.

Palmer also said he’s spoken with Josh Semanco, director of Blue Mountain Recreation Commission regarding lifeguards affected by the closure of Cressona Pool.

The mayor said he’s given Semanco a copy of the application Minersville uses for its summer jobs and there will be opportunities to pick up hours for lifeguards who worked at Cressona Pool as well as the indoor pool at Blue Mountain Middle School.

The offer has two benefits. It gives those who lost their summer job in Cressona a chance for work and it’ll help Minersville with the staffing issues it sometimes has at its public swimming pool.

Six lifeguards who worked at Minersville Pool last summer are not returning this year. Minersville currently has nine lifeguards for this summer, presuming that two of them get their licenses.
