A Schuylkill County man is accused of choking out a friend of his ex-girlfriend in the middle of a Schuylkill Haven street after following both of them one night last month.
According to court documents, police in Schuylkill Haven were called to a home on Fritz Reed Ave. during the overnight hours on March 29. That’s where one alleged victim in this incident said her ex-boyfriend – identified as Cody Zulkowski, 25, of Frackville – had been following her and her friend all night.
The ex-girlfriend reportedly told police that while at a bar in Schuylkill Haven, she noticed Zulkowski sitting in his vehicle, a red Nissan Rogue, in one of the car wash bays across the street from the establishment she was patronizing.
She and her friend then left that business and went to a bar in Minersville. After they left that business, the friend dropped off Zulkowski’s ex-girlfriend at her home and went to his home in Schuylkill Haven. When the friend parked outside his home, Zulkowski allegedly approached him at his driver’s-side door and wanted to fight.
The friend opened his vehicle door, and Zulkowski allegedly attacked him. A physical altercation ensued, during which Zulkowski allegedly choked out the friend. The friend told police he woke up in the middle of the street following the fight. He said it felt as though he was put in a headlock. Police say they noticed abrasions on the left side of his face, on the back of his head, and on his right shoulder. His left eye was beginning to swell, too, police say.
The friend then began vomiting and said he felt lightheaded.
Police say they obtained security footage near the scene of this incident, and at 3:13 a.m., it showed Zulkowski’s vehicle following the friend’s vehicle. A few minutes later, police say Zulkowski is seen walking toward the friend’s home and then walking away a few minutes after that. Zulkowski is then seen sprinting in an alley behind a church near the scene of this fight.
At around the same time, the ex-girlfriend reportedly told police she heard loud banging on her door. When she opened the door, she told police that she saw Zulkowski walking toward Dock St. as he yelled at her, calling her a “slut” and a “whore.”
The ex-girlfriend said this caused her to come outside and start yelling back at Zulkowski. When she did that, Zulkowski turned around and started sprinting toward her door.
Police later obtained a document showing that Zulkowski was banned from entering any property owned by Schuylkill County Housing Authority.
State Police–Frackville were brought into the investigation. They contacted Zulkowski at his home in Frackville, but he was allegedly uncooperative with police.
Police have charged Zulkowski with numerous offenses related to this alleged incident, including strangulation, simple assault, defiant trespass, loitering and prowling at night, harassment, and reckless endangerment, all misdemeanors. He’s also facing summary offenses for harassment and disorderly conduct.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for April 29 before District Magistrate Judge AJ Serina.
