The chairman of Shenandoah’s Sewer Authority is facing charges after police say he punched a neighbor in the face while he was campaigning for votes on Borough Council.
According to court documents filed by Shenandoah Borough Police Dept., this alleged incident happened on the morning of March 26. Police say they received a call from a resident of Furnace St., who said his neighbor – identified as 76-year-old Robert Shumski – had been on his porch and refused to leave.
Shumski, according to a report from The Shenandoah Sentinel, is chairman of Shenandoah Municipal Sewer Authority.
The neighbor says he answered the door when Shumski was knocking. When he answered the door, Shumski allegedly said he wanted to talk to his wife so he could ask her to vote for him for a seat on Shenandoah’s Borough Council.
Based on records with Schuylkill County Election Bureau, Shumski is not listed as a major party candidate in this year’s Municipal Election. And on the date of this alleged incident, March 26, is 15 days after the last day candidates from either the Republican or Democrat parties could file petitions to appear on the May 20 Primary ballot.
The neighbor tells police he told Shumski that his wife has nothing to do with local politics and that she should leave his residence. Shumski, he told police, refused to leave the porch and continued to ask to speak to his neighbor’s wife.
This argument continued until the neighbor attempted to “usher” Shumski from his porch. The neighbor reportedly told police that he did not push Shumski aggressively but attempted to “assist him off the porch,” according to the police report.
Shumski responded, he said, by punching his neighbor on the left side of his face. Eventually, Shumski left the area. Police say they observed redness on the neighbor’s face.
When contacted by police, Shumski reportedly admitted to attempting to contact his neighbor’s wife because he was trying to get votes to get on Shenandoah Borough Council. He also told police that his neighbor tried to push him off the porch and that he never touched his neighbor.
Police have filed defiant trespass and harassment charges against Shumski. He’s been ordered to appear before District Magistrate Judge Anthony Kilker for a preliminary hearing on May 1.
