A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Schuylkill County man who allegedly led police on a high-speed pursuit from Pottsville to Interstate 78 that, at times, reached speeds of 100 mph.
According to court documents, police in Pottsville noticed a vehicle with dark window tints traveling north on S. Centre St. in the city shortly after midnight on March 2. Police say they got behind the vehicle and noted that its registration had expired at the end of February.
The vehicle then turned right onto Route 61 without using a turn signal, prompting police to activate their lights and siren. That did not cause the driver – later identified as Shawnelle Young, 30, of Pottsville – to stop and a pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit continued into North Manheim Township, where Young turned onto Pottsville St., heading into Cressona, and then onto Sillyman St. in the borough. Young then led police south on Route 183, at times reaching a speed of 100 mph.
As Young turned on to Interstate 78-East, police ended their pursuit as he continued to drive at a high speed in heavy traffic.
Magisterial District Judge James Reiley signed an arrest warrant for Young on March 21. Young is facing charges of eluding police, a third-degree felony, and summary offenses for reckless driving, failing to obey traffic-control devices, and failing to stop at a Stop sign.
