U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser (PA-9), who represents Schuylkill County in the House of Representatives, has signed on as a co-sponsor of legislation that would require AM radio in every new automobile sold in America.
The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act was recently re-introduced by New Jersey Rep. Frank Pallone, who says AM radio was vital to his constituents during Superstorm Sandy and is an asset to any American during an emergency.
“Across Pennsylvania and the nation, AM radio is a crucial source of information, entertainment, and emergency alerts,” Meuser says in a statement released Wednesday afternoon. “In rural areas, especially during natural disasters, AM radio is often the only reliable way to stay informed when internet or cell service is unavailable. This bill ensures that drivers can continue to rely on AM radio in their vehicles to remain prepared and up to date. I’m pleased to cosponsor this bipartisan legislation and look forward to voting for it when it comes to the House Floor.”
This legislation would mandate that the Dept. of Transportation require automakers to include AM radio as standard equipment in all new vehicles. AM radio must be included in the vehicle at no additional cost, according to how the bill is drafted. The AM radio must be easily accessible.
Automakers who sell vehicles manufactured before the bill goes into effect must also notify consumers that the vehicle does not include AM radio.
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) would also be directed to study the importance of AM radio, specifically during emergencies.
