Pottsville Democrats Endorse Wollyung for Mayor; Atkinson Not Running

Wood, Weres complete slate of candidates for Council

Pottsville’s Democrat slate of candidates for the 2025 Municipal Election appears set.

There are three seats on City Council up for grabs, including Mayor, and each of the major parties is expected to run a full slate of candidates in an attempt to either maintain or wrest control of the majority in November.

The city’s Democrat Committee announced that Andy Wollyung will be the party’s endorsed candidate for Mayor. Wollyung is a current City Councilman who won election in 2023.

Wollyung is being endorsed by Democrats to be Pottsville’s next Mayor. Current Mayor Mark Atkinson has decided not to run. According to a report from the Republican Herald, he chose to bow out of City government after his term ends at the end of this year due to family and career reasons.

Atkinson was appointed Mayor in 2024 following the retirement of Dave Clews, who stepped down for health reasons.

“I am honored and humbled to accept the Democratic Party’s nomination for Mayor of the City of Pottsville. At 41 years old, I have spent my life dedicated to this community – working alongside you, learning from you, and fighting
for a stronger future for our city,” Wollyung says in a statement released Monday.

Wollyung says he’s prepared to be the next Mayor of Pottsville thanks to his experiences.

“As a longtime member of the Yorkville Hose Fire Department, I understand what it means to be on the front lines, working in the trenches with the people who keep our city running,” he says. “I know the struggles of business owners, workers, and first responders—the long hours, the hard decisions, and the sacrifices that come with building something meaningful. I am not just a leader from behind a desk; I am a hardworking man who stands beside you in the field, in the firehouse, and in the workplace. Pottsville deserves a mayor who understands both the challenges of running a business and the realities of working on the ground every day.”

Alongside Wollyung on the endorsed Democrat ticket are new Councilman Thomas Wood. Wood was appointed to City Council following Clews’ retirement and Atkinson assuming the role of Mayor, leaving Atkinson’s seat on Council vacant.

“I have been truly fortunate to have lived in the city of Pottsville and continue to want to help our city move forward. These are
some of the reasons that I am bidding for a seat within our local government,” Wood says in a statement.

Mike Weres, the City’s current Controller, will run for the other Council seat up for grabs. He won election as Controller in 2023.

If Wollyung and Weres were to emerge victorious in November, their seats on Council and as Controller, respectivelyl, would have to be filled by appointment.

Pottsville’s Republican Party Committee has not yet announced its slate of candidates in the 2025 Election.
