A man was found hiding behind a freezer in the basement of a home in Schuylkill County last week.
Homeowners told police in West Penn Township that they knew Robert Parvel but did not give him permission to be in their home. On the morning of Jan. 16, police were called to a home in West Penn Township after one of the homeowners had heard noises coming from the basement.
When this homeowner went to check on the noises, she said she found clothing and cigarettes that didn’t belong there. It looked as though someone was staying in the basement, she told police.
West Penn Police Sgt. John Kaczmarczyk said he then searched the same basement and said in court documents he filed last week that he found Pavel hiding behind a freezer. Kaczmarczyk also said he found that Parvel had removed food from that freezer and there was an open beer bottle nearby.
Parvel was then taken into custody. While being taken into custody, Parvel reportedly asked Kaczmarczyk why he was being arrested. Kaczmarczyk told him that he had broken into the home, which Parvel denied. Instead, he said, he’d simply walked in through the basement door. However,
Homeowners told police they knew Parvel but didn’t give him permission to be in their basement. Parvel, with an address listed as the Allentown Rescue Mission, had been allowed to stay in an RV owned by the homeowners a year prior, police say, but was kicked out because of a drinking problem.
Parvel was arraigned before District Magistrate Judge AJ Serina on Jan. 16 and remanded to Schuylkill County Prison on $25,000 bail. He’s being charged with burglary, a first-degree felony, and criminal trespass, a second-degree felony.
