Police filed charges earlier this week against a Hegins woman who allegedly struck a juvenile with her vehicle at the site of a street race in Schuylkill County back in October.
According to court documents filed by State Police-Schuylkill Haven, the barracks was notified by Geisinger-St. Luke’s Hospital near Orwigsburg during the early morning hours of Oct. 6, 2024, about a 14-year-old boy who’d been injured in a suspected hit-and-run incident. The incident reportedly happened along State Route 125 in the area of the Interstate 81 overpass in Frailey Township.
Police went to the hospital and interviewed the boy – who suffered an injured leg and concussion – who said he was attending a street race, watching vehicles drag racing as he stood on the side of Route 125. At some point during the racing, he told police he was struck by a vehicle traveling west on Route 125.
The father of the victim reportedly told police that he took his son to watch the street racing event. He said a person driving a blue Dodge Dart struck his son, did not stop, and then continued west on Route 125.
According to the father, police say, when he approached his son, he was unconcious for about 10 seconds. He and his wife then took their son to the hospital for treatment.
Witnesses at the scene of this incident handed over a blue mirror that allegedly came from the vehicle that struck the boy, police say. The vehicle suspected of striking the child at the drag race was located along Good Spring Rd. in Hegins Township later on Oct. 6. It had damage to its passenger side, including missing a mirror.
Interviews were conducted with multiple people on the 6th who said they decided on Oct. 5 to go for a joy ride. Behind the wheel for the joy ride was Mya Deiter, 18. During the drive, Deiter was heading westbound, police say they learned from their interviews, when the vehicle struck the boy on the side of the road and continued driving.
Police filed charges on Jan. 15 against Deiter for failing to stop at an accident involving personal injury, a third-degree felony, and summary offenses of failing to stop and given information and render aid and failing to report an accident to police.
