A Frackville man has been ordered to answer to charges that he swung a sword at another man during an altercation back in October.
According to a criminal complaint filed by Minersville Police earlier this week, Israel Santiago, 59, was involved in a fight with a woman in the borough on Carbon St. back on Oct. 6.
Police were dispatched to that area shortly before 6 p.m. that evening and encountered a woman who said Santiago hit her in the face and strangled her. The woman reportedly told Santiago to leave her property but he refused, police say.
During the course of that altercation, the victim’s son intervened. The son also told Santiago to leave the property. Santiago allegedly also refused that order from the victim’s son and shoved him. The son pushed back, prompting Santiago to take what police call a bladed stance, raising his fists and striking the victim’s son.
Santiago was reportedly told once again by the son to leave the property but again, he refused. That’s when Santiago, police say, ran into a backyard shed and emerged with a katana-style blade.
Sword in hand, Santiago reportedly took a run at the victim’s son but the complainant victim stepped in to break up the attack.
Police have charged Santiago with aggravated assault and strangulation, both second-degree felonies, as well as misdemeanors for simple assault. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 4, 2025.
