500+ Big Lots Distribution Center Employees Notified of Impending Layoffs

Layoffs to be completed by end of March 2025

More than 500 employees at the Big Lots Distribution Center located near Tremont in Schuylkill County received a WARN Notice in the last few days, indicating they’re about to be out of a job.

According to the Pennsylvania Dept. of Labor & Industry, the WARN Notice affects 505 employees at the Big Lots facility on Rausch Creek Rd. Layoffs there are expected to commence on Jan. 6, 2025, and extend through March 31.

These WARN Notices were distributed about a week after Big Lots Inc. announced that it’ll be holding Going Out of Business sales at all its 963 stores nationwide. Big Lots has a store near Frackville at the site of the former Schuylkill Mall.

Big Lots was supposed to sell its assets to Nexus Capital Management but that deal fell through. The company said it was working on finding another buyer that might allow stores and other facilities to stay open.

According to the Pennsylvania Dept. of Labor & Industry, Big Lots is the 15th largest employer in Schuylkill County.
