A total of five dogs are expected to be surrendered to a Schuylkill County animal shelter on Sunday following a house fire in Cumbola Friday that claimed the lives of multiple other dogs.
Becky Worth, manager at Ruth Steinert SPCA in Pine Grove, tells The Canary that the surviving dogs’ owner is expected to surrender five dogs to the shelter on Sunday.
According to State Police-Frackville, charges will likely be filed against the owner of the dogs that were in the home at 169 Market St. in Cumbola, Blythe Township. That building caught fire Friday afternoon.
Troopers were called to the scene following the fire to investigate possible dog law violations, police say.
Inside that home, according to our reporting Friday night, multiple dogs died in the fire but some were rescued. It hasn’t been revealed exactly how many dogs perished in the blaze. During the firefight, the second floor of the building collapsed into the first floor, making the task of accounting for any dogs inside difficult, initially.
Regardless of the debris caused by the fire, conditions in the home prior to the incident were reportedly poor, according to fire officials who responded to the call.
