Clews Resigning as Pottsville Mayor

Mayor cites health concerns as reason for stepping aside.

Pottsville Mayor Dave Clews says he’s resigning from his position in the middle of next month.

He issued a press release Thursday morning announcing his decision.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce my decision to resign from my position as Mayor of the great City of Pottsville,” Clews says.

The resignation will take effect on Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.

“After much reflection and consultation with my family and healthcare providers, I have come to the conclusion that my current health challengers make it difficult for me to continue serving in this role at the level you deserve,” Clews says.

Clews says his health challenges which have come to the fore in the past year, now require his full attention.

“Unfortunately, as you may know, I have been dealing with health concerns over the past year, and they now require my full focus and attention,” Clews says in his statement. “While stepping down is a difficult decision, I believe it is the best course of action at this time.

“As most of you know, I love being called Mayor. However, that title comes second to ‘Pappy’. I intend to focus upon my full recovery so that I may enjoy my family, friends, and grandkids in this wonderful City that I call home,” Clews says.

Clews won election as Mayor of Pottsville in the November 2021 General Election, running as a Republican, defeating incumbent Democrat Mayor James Muldowney.

“Serving as your mayor has been one of the greatest honors of my life. Together, we have faced challenges, celebrated successes, and made great strides toward a brighter future for our community,” Clews says. “I am deeply proud of what we have accomplished during my tenure, and I have full confidence that the strong leadership we have built will continue this important work in the months and years ahead.

“I want to express my deepest gratitude to the residents of Pottsville, my colleagues in city government, and all the people behind the scenes who work tirelessly to make our community a better place,” Clews adds. “Your support and encouragement have meant the world to me, and I am confident that our city will continue to thrive for future generations. Thank you for the trust you have placed in me, and for your understanding during this time. I look forward to watching our community continue to grow and succeed, even as I step back to focus on my health.”
