Just a few weeks after the Pottsville Zoning Hearing Board denied a New York developer a variance to transform a former Pottsville Catholic school building into a luxury apartment building, the property is back on the market.
The property at 619 Mahantongo St. was listed on Aug. 9. On July 18, the building’s current owner, Sinan Ozbeyl, sought a zoning variance that would allow him to transform the dilapidated building into a dozen apartment units.
Ozbeyl’s request was denied. And even though he told The Canary he planned to appeal the City’s decision, the former school building was just put back on the market.
The asking price is $399,900. In 2022, Ozbeyl purchased the massive 10,000-square foot property for $155,000.
Will Primeau, of Ramus Realty Group, is the listing agent. The building is being sold as-is and a cash only sale.
When the Zoning Hearing Board denied Ozbeyl’s request for a variance, board members expressed concerns about parking in that congested neighborhood of Mahantongo St.
Based on the listing, it appears Ozbeyl began doing some extensive renovations to the interior of the property, starting the extensive transformation of the rundown school into an apartment building.
That listing shows the renovation work still has a long way to go.
But Ozbeyl told zoning board members that he was ready to invest nearly $1 million to complete the project.
CORRECTION: We erroneously reported that this building was the former Pottsville Catholic High School. That school was originally located at 112 S. 7th St., just behind this building.

Putzville at its finest. Obviously the locals never lived in a real city, where you almost never get to park in front of your house.

Before getting too excited about miraculously low prices and jumping into Schuylkill County infamous “business opportunities” one has to do extensive search on what are the reasons these properties are not in demand. This gentleman definitely did not do his homework.
