More people in Schuylkill County are likely saying we could use some rain. And according to updated information released by the National Drought Mitigation Center, they’d be right.
In information released this week, 65.51% of Schuylkill County is currently experiencing moderate drought conditions. That’s up nearly 4% over the previous week. The latest update from the Drought Mitigation Center includes data through this past Tuesday.
A year ago at this time, the moderate drought that covered the entire county had been relieved by rain.
This year, however, we’re still waiting on some steady rain that will hopefully relieve the drought conditions that are progressively getting worse through the summer.
The National Weather Service forecast for Schuylkill County does show an increased chance of rain showers and thunderstorms in the middle of next week. Similar forecasts this summer haven’t yielded much rain, however.
The regions of Schuylkill County experiencing moderate drought are in the south, central, north, and east-central. Other regions not included in the moderate drought conditions are labeled as abnormally dry.
Across Pennsylvania, large portions of 6 counties are experiencing severe drought conditions: Franklin, Fulton, Bedford, Somerset. Greene and Washington counties also have small portions of each are experiencing similar conditions.
Weekly drought conditions are released by the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in conjunction with the US Dept. of Agriculture and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
