John Holobetz, a 2021 graduate of Pottsville Area High School, was just selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the fifth round of the 2024 MLB Draft.
Holobetz left Pottsville to pitch for Radford in the 2021-22 season, where he posted a 3-2 record with 2 saves. He appeared in 20 games that season, 3 of them as a starter.
He then transferred to Old Dominion University for his sophomore and junior seasons. In the 2023-24 season, he had a 4-5 record in 15 games, 4 of them as a starter. He pitched 62.2 innings, allowing just 57 hits while striking out 52 and walking just 20.
For his entire 3-year collegiate career, Holobetz posted a 9-8 record and has struck out 135 batters and walked 47.
If he chooses to pursue his baseball future as a professional, Holobetz would join fellow Pottsville alum Travis Blankenhorn in the ranks of Minor League players. Blankenhorn is currently with the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings of the Washington Nationals organization.
Reggie Crawford, a North Schuylkill grad, is currently also at the Triple-A level with the Sacramento River Cats of the San Francisco Giants organization.
Holobetz is the son of Michael and Angela Holobetz.
